Administrative Medical Assistant

ADMINISTRATIVE (FRONT OFFICE) MEDICAL ASSISTANT
Two 9-week sessions. $70 each session. Administrative Medical Assisting requires three hours every day: Medical-Clerical Training (1:30-3:30pm) and Medical Terminology (3:30-4:30pm). These courses are usually taken together but may be taken separately. Students will be prepared for employment as an administrative medical assistant, medical records clerk, patient admitting representative, and many other positions. The Medical-Clerical Training component includes phone answering, appointment scheduling, insurance billing, computerized medical records and forms, and more. After 18 weeks (two training cycles), students may earn a certificate and/or a recommendation for a volunteer internship at Children's Hospital Oakland.
Prerequisites: Students must be able to (1) type accurately 20 or more words a minute, (2) create, edit, save and open Microsoft Word documents, and (3) write clearly, using correct subject-verb agreement and punctuation. The administration may, at any time, refund tuition and direct a student to Keyboarding, Microsoft Word/Office, and/or Business Communication courses if it is determined that the student cannot demonstrate the prerequisite skills.

MEDICAL KEYBOARDING
This is an introductory course to develop basic keyboarding skills that are needed to input information accurately and quickly using a computer in a medical setting. Students will become familiar with beginning medical keyboarding and medical terms. Emphasis on learning the touch operation of the computer keyboard. 15 weeks.

MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY
(No Fee) Students learn the language that is used in most medical jobs. Covers word parts, body structure and function, diseases, and treatments used in many medical specialties. All students are required to obtain the textbook and complete homework assignments. After 18 weeks (two training cycles), students may earn a certificate. Textbook required.

MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY - SPECIALTIES
(No Fee) 18 weeks. This course approaches the study of medical terminology from a medical specialty point of view using patient records. This approach allows for immediate application and strengthens the learning of medical terms. The purpose of this course is to enable the student to use and understand the vocabulary of medical terms. The student will be able to understand standard abbreviations, spell medical terms, and to use prefixes, suffixes, and word roots to decipher the meaning of new words. 15 weeks.

CPR/First Aid

CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION/CPR
The goal of this course is to provide individuals with the basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide effective basic life support in an emergency for adult, child and infant. FIRST AID
Enrollment limited to 20 students. Properly applied first aid can save lives, reduce recovery time and quite possibly mean the difference between temporary or life long disability for the victim. Home Health Care Worker

HOME HEALTH CARE WORKER
(No fee) Five days, May 15-22. This is not a state mandated class. Learn skills to provide care in a home care setting, such as transferring techniques, personal care, bed baths, range of motion exercises, use of equipment and adaptive aides, caring for a person with Alzheimer's disease, and feeding techniques. We will cover the physical, psychological, and social aspects of aging, including dying and death, the hospice concept and holistic health, home safety, employment strategies and professionalism. This class is sponsored by Alameda County In-Home Support Services.
