ADMINISTRATIVE (FRONT OFFICE) MEDICAL ASSISTANT (no online registration)
All students wishing to enroll in the Administrative Medical Assistant course (except continuing students) MUST attend an orientation and pass an assessment before registering for the class. The assessment is for typing, Microsoft Word, writing, and human relations skills. Candidates will be notified within two days if accepted into the program. Some candidates may be accepted on condition that they take other courses along with this course, to develop the above skills.

Administrative Medical Assisting consists of two components: Medical-Clerical Training (1:30-3:30 daily) and Medical Terminology (3:30-4:30 daily). These two components are usually taken together but may be taken separately. Students will be prepared for employment as an administrative medical assistant, medical records clerk, patient admitting representative, and many other positions. The Medical-Clerical Training component includes phone answering, appointment scheduling, insurance billing, computerized medical records and forms, and more. After 18 weeks (two training cycles), students may earn a certificate and/or a recommendation for a volunteer internship at Children's Hospital Oakland.

Two 9-week sessions. $70.00 each session. No online registration.

MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY (no online registration)
Students learn the language that is used in most medical jobs. Covers word parts, body structure and function, diseases, and treatments used in many medical specialties. All students are required to obtain the textbook and complete homework assignments. After 18 weeks (two training cycles), students may earn a certificate. Textbook required.

CNA Program/Home Health Aide Program

CERTIFIED NURSING ASSISTANT/HOME HEALTH AIDE PROGRAMS (no online registration)
Fee: $400 (does not include CPR or uniforms) The Certified Nursing Assistant program prepares students for a career working with patients in a variety of health care settings. All applicants:
  • must have a social security card
  • be able to pass the Department of Justice's criminal back-ground check
  • cannot currently be on parole or probation. (All convictions must be dismissed or expunged before admittance into the program.)

Interested students must attend a two-hour orientation, which includes a reading and written assessment. ESL level 400+ encouraged to apply. Orientations for the Spring 2009 class will be in Room 21. To register for the Spring CNA class you must have attended an orientation session.

CLINICAL MEDICAL ASSISTANT TRAINING PROGRAM
Program Summary: As a Clinical Medical Assistant you will help the physician carry out procedures, care for patients, perform simple lab tests and administer medications. The Clinical Medical Assistant works in a doctor's office or clinic. This course combines 134 hours of classroom instruction, including electrocardiography (EKG), with a 160-hour externship to provide you with a complete learning experience. CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION/CPR
The goal of this course is to provide individuals with the basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide effective basic life support in an emergency for adult, child and infant. FIRST AID
Enrollment limited to 20 students. Properly applied first aid can save lives, reduce recovery time and quite possibly mean the difference between temporary or life long disability for the victim. Participants learn to recognize and treat the signs and symptoms of injuries and sudden illness. Certificate upon successful completion of skills and written test.

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)

This exciting training course combines 150 hours of classroom time with 50 hours of clinical observation with hospitals, fire departments and ambulance services. Students will learn how to provide basic emergency care to patients with acute illnesses or injuries. Successful students will be prepared to take the national board exam needed to become a California State certified EMT. Students must be able to pass a state background check in order to be EMT certified. Course includes the healthcare provider CPR certificate issued the first day of class. All students MUST attend an orientation and pass a basic reading and math assessment prior to beginning the course. Full refunds will be given to students who fail to pass the math and reading assessment. Access to the internet is highly recommended.

Class begins April 15, and will meet Wednesday and Fridays from 8:30am to 4:30pm. Clinical observation will occur on Thursdays or as schedules permit. Estimated cost of tuition is $900 and covers books, uniform shirts, and basic assessment equipment. Students are required to buy work pants and boots.
