When can I register and when do classes begin? Check the calendar page for the current quarter's general schedule. Check the class listings for start dates. Note that many classes do not follow the eight or nine-week system and that some classes allow enrollment at any time. Do I have to live in Berkeley to take classes? No. Anyone can take classes at BAS. Can I enroll by phone? Phone registration is available for Career Technical Education classes only during certain dates and times. See the registration page for details. The office phone is 510.644.6130. Registration for any class is available via postal mail, fax, or in person during regular office hours. See the registration page for full information. Do I need a credit card for online registration? Yes, you need a credit card for online or fax registration. You can enroll in a class by mail with a check or credit card. In person, options include cash. Please do not mail cash. Can I visit a class before deciding to take it? Yes, you can obtain a Visitor's Pass from the main office and drop in to see any class or meet the instructor. A visitor's pass is good for 30 minutes. If the class is full should I attempt to get in anyway? There are no official waiting lists for full classes. However, do check with the instructor on the first day to see if there are any last minute "no shows." Can I enroll in a class after it begins? Most of the classes at the school are open-enrollment, meaning that students can join after the class begins. However, you should consider that you may get more out of a class if you can attend from the beginning. Check with the instructor of the class for more information. How much does it cost to take a class? Many of the classes are free and all are relatively low-cost. ESL, Adult Basic Education and High School Diploma classes are free. Community service (fee-based classes) and career prep class fees are in the course listings in the catalog and on this website. Citizens 55 years of age or over receive a reduction of 25% for most classes. Please note: The online registration system is unable to calculate the senior discount. Online registration class listings include a discount of $5. There is an online registration charge of $2.95 per transaction. Do I have to buy a textbook? Some classes require a textbook, and some do not. Check with the instructor on the first day of class. Do you have advising for students? Yes, BAS offers career class advising for students. See the Advising page for more information. Do you offer child-care? Yes. Free childcare through Headstart is offered for qualified students attending BAS classes. To qualify the child must be from 3 to 5 years of age, residing in Berkeley, Albany or Emeryville, and the family must meet federal low-income guidelines. Phone 510.848.9092 for more information. Can I take ESL classes with a tourist (B-2) visa? Does the school issue I-20 (F-1) visa forms? You can take free ESL classes with a tourist visa. Sorry, the school cannot assist you with getting an I-20 or any other visa. What computer class should I take first? Should I take a Macintosh or Windows class? We recommend that you begin with an Introduction to Computers class. Also, if you cannot touch-type, you should take a Keyboarding class. For more information see the Career Overview page. The Windows platform (PC) is more widely used in business settings. Macintoshes are more widely used in graphic design, publishing and educational settings.
